Measuring the energy consumption of IoT devices using Contiki-NG

Research on networking for constrained wireless embedded devices typically considers standard KPIs, such as network delay, packet loss/delivery rate, and throughput. Importantly, research works that target networks of battery-powered devices also investigate energy consumption. Energy consumption can be modelled, or it can be measured. Somewhere between those two approaches is software-based estimation using Contiki-NG’s ENERGEST module. ENERGEST has been used for the analysis of the energy consumption characteristics of works documented in thousands of academic manuscripts. In this seminar we discuss the details of ENERGEST. We explore what it measures and how it measures it, and we highlight some of its limitations specifically in terms of reproducibility of research results.
